SMITH Published: May 8, 1995 www.nytimes.com To a man, the Indianapolis Pacers could not recall ever witnessing anything like the finish to their 107-105 victory over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden yesterday -- in which Pacers guard Reggie Miller hit back-to-back 3-point shots in the span of 3.1 seconds to tie the score and then provided the margin of victory with two free throws with 7.5 seconds remaining. But what was even more unfathomable to the Pacers was how the Knicks, who were in control of the game (up by 6 points with 18.7 seconds to play) could unravel. Who would have thought that Knicks forward Anthony Mason would bungle an inbounds pass and throw it right to Miller for an open shot? Who could foresee guard John Starks missing two free throws with the score tied, 105-105, and 13.2 seconds to play? "Not at this point in the season," said Pacers guard Vern Fleming. "These games are very important, especially when you're playing at home and you've got the game won really and all you have to do is take care of the ball and make free throws. "They used up three timeouts to save the ball. They didn't have any timeouts at the end of the game. That put a lot of pressure on them."
